This programmatic work for piano is about a man who is unfortunately plagued by evil, obnoxious gnomes. The music is based around the pitches [G, A, Bb, B, E, F#] and the gnomes are generally represented by [E, Bb, E, G, F#] (and often just a tritone sliding down). Because they are so obnoxious, their theme can be found all over the place in obvious statements (any of those descending tritone slides) and even some hidden places (hint: see tonal centers of his dream). In the end, he of course did not stand a chance.
