Edgar Allan Poe has always been one of my favorite authors because of the character atmosphere found in his stories and poems. I have composed several pieces using his texts and I am always looking to musically capture the atmosphere found in them. In EVENING STAR, his words emphasize a coldness and distance and this can be found in the use of fifths and non-chord tones in the harmony. There is a bit of bright, shining music toward the end, but it ultimately settles back down to the coldness.
